Lossiemouth: The West Beach car park is really taking a hit from the storms. Parts of it have been closed off since mid-November for safety. It’s a bit of a mess, honestly.
High waves have caused some serious damage, and the council has had to put up fences to keep folks safe. It’s not just a small area either; a good chunk of the car park is out of commission.
The Lossiemouth Community Development Trust mentioned that there’s no public funding available to fix things up. So, it’s all on Moray Council to handle the repairs since they lease the land.
Fiona Conti, who chairs the trust, pointed out that the situation is likely to get worse. She said part of the pavement along the shore has been washed away, and every high tide brings more trouble.
With the waves washing away the material under the car park, it’s no wonder more holes are popping up. Right now, over a third of the car park is fenced off, which means about 25 parking spots are lost.
Alan Ellison from the Moray SUP club, which meets nearby, highlighted how important this space is for everyone. It’s not just for paddleboarders; it’s used by golfers, café customers, surfers, and dog walkers too.
He mentioned that it’s a popular spot, especially in summer, and if people can’t find parking, they might skip visiting Lossiemouth altogether.
A spokesperson from Moray Council said they’ve fenced off the worst areas for safety but have kept over half the car park open. They’re looking into options to fix the damage and will keep the community in the loop.
It’s clear that the damage is getting worse, and the community is feeling the impact.
