London: Recently, it came to light that 26 people have fallen into the gap between trains and platforms at a London Underground station. This includes a tragic incident where a man lost his life after falling into the gap.

The incidents mostly happened at Waterloo station on the Bakerloo line from May 2020 to November last year. A report from the Rail Accident Investigation Branch highlighted a specific case where a 59-year-old man fell and was tragically crushed by a departing train.

Jama Mohamed Warsame couldn’t get himself out in time and was hit by another train shortly after. At the time, there were no staff or other passengers around. The investigation suggested that Transport for London (TfL) should regularly assess risks in the area to prevent such accidents.

TfL expressed their condolences to Mr. Warsame’s family and mentioned they were working on the recommendations from the report. They’ve also been looking into updating platform designs to make things safer for everyone.

The data was shared after a Freedom of Information request, which also mentioned an ongoing claim for injuries at Waterloo station. TfL is trying to improve platform layouts and train designs to minimize risks.

According to a TfL case officer, they’ve implemented specific safety measures at various stations, especially where incidents are more frequent. For instance, they’ve upgraded cameras at Waterloo to help train operators see the platform better.

They’re also working on reducing the gap between trains and platforms. When injuries happen, TfL ensures first aid is provided and investigates the cause to see if any changes are needed.

In light of another fatality at Stratford station, TfL’s Chief Safety Officer, Lilli Matson, reassured that serious injuries are rare but emphasized their commitment to improving safety across the network.

She stated that they’re always looking to learn from incidents and will take action based on recommendations from investigations.
