London: Keith Scovell, a 55-year-old baker from Kentish Town, never thought his cakes would make him famous. It all started with a crocodile cake for his sister’s birthday about seven years ago.
That first cake was a bit of a disaster, but it got a lot of laughs. People loved it, and that pushed him to keep experimenting with his baking skills.
His cake of Taylor Swift for his niece’s 18th birthday really took off online, racking up thousands of views. Keith admits he didn’t even realize how popular it was until friends pointed it out.
Since then, he’s made cakes of famous faces like Ant and Dec, King Charles, and even Donald Trump. Some of his creations have even been featured on national TV, which is pretty wild!
Keith just makes these cakes for fun, giving them away to friends and family. He’s not in it for the money, saying, “I just do them for family and friends.”
His first cake was that crocodile, which he jokingly calls “horrendous.” But it was so funny that it caught people’s attention, and he started making more cakes for family events.
For his niece’s birthday, he made a cake inspired by Mary Poppins, which turned out to be a bit scary. He’s even crafted engagement cakes that look like hands, which is pretty creative!
Keith tries to keep his cakes funny without being disrespectful. He’s noticed that lately, his cakes are starting to look more like the people they’re meant to represent.
He’s been getting messages from all over the world asking for his cakes, which he finds surprising. “I had no idea people were viewing them,” he said, laughing.
Even though his cakes are edible, he doesn’t see himself competing on shows like the Great British Bake Off. He’s all about the fun and creativity, not the competition.
With his growing popularity, Keith is considering selling his cakes or maybe even offering a cake-making kit. He’s excited about future creations, especially with big events coming up.
