Yate: A heartbreaking incident unfolded when a drink driver took the life of a beloved mother and lollipop lady. Ashley Billing, 39, was sentenced to nine years in prison after pleading guilty to causing death by driving under the influence.
Rebecca Ashmead, 49, known as “Bex,” was hit by Billing’s car on Kennedy Way on March 29, 2023. Sadly, she died at the scene despite the efforts of emergency services.
Billing, who was disqualified and uninsured, didn’t stop after the crash. Police managed to track him down, and tests confirmed he was over the limit. His sentence was reduced by three years due to his guilty plea, and he’s also banned from driving for a decade.
Bex was a cherished lollipop lady at her daughter’s school and was described as the heart of her family. Her loved ones expressed relief at the sentencing but emphasized that no amount of time in prison could bring her back.
They thanked the police for their support and hoped this tragedy would raise awareness about the dangers of impaired driving. Officer Anthony Hall highlighted the risks of driving under the influence, stressing that such actions have devastating consequences.
