He was in Gaza for a short trip that turned into a long stay due to the conflict. The doctor, who works at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital, was there to perform transplants. He managed to complete four surgeries before the situation escalated.
Dr. Hammad was woken up one night by explosions, realizing that a major attack was happening. After a tough time, he finally made it back home to his family in Merseyside. But many of his friends and colleagues are still stuck in Gaza, and he worries about them daily.
He expressed relief about the ceasefire news but also frustration over how long it took to happen. So many lives have been lost, and he feels it’s just the beginning of a long road to recovery for the people in Gaza.
Dr. Hammad mentioned that thousands are waiting for medical help, and the healthcare system there is in ruins. The ceasefire is set to start soon, allowing some humanitarian aid and the return of displaced people.
He shared that during his time in Gaza, the local people were incredibly generous, risking their safety to help him and others. It’s a tough situation, but he’s hopeful for the future.
