Chester: So, MP Mike Amesbury is in court today, right? He’s facing some serious stuff—assault charges, to be exact. This all kicked off after a video popped up online showing an incident in Frodsham last October.
Amesbury, who’s 55 and used to be a councillor in Manchester, is expected to enter his plea today. The whole thing went down in the early hours of October 26, when he allegedly assaulted a 45-year-old man.
After the footage came out, he got suspended from the Labour Party and is now sitting as an independent. It’s a pretty big deal, and the police have been involved since the start.
Cheshire Police confirmed that he’s been summoned to court for a section 39 assault charge. They said the incident was reported around 2:48 AM on that Saturday morning.
Rosemary Ainslie from the Crown Prosecution Service mentioned they reviewed the evidence and decided to charge him with common assault. Amesbury himself said the incident was “deeply regrettable” and that he’s cooperating with the police.
Reporter Andrew Bardsley is in the courtroom, so we’ll be getting live updates on what happens next. Stay tuned!
