Canberra: So, guess what? Live rock lobsters are making a comeback on Chinese menus! This is a big deal because it shows that Australia and China are getting along better.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced that China is ready to fully resume the live rock lobster trade. This is a win for both countries, especially for Aussie seafood lovers.
Albanese mentioned that this positive outcome is thanks to a steady and calm approach from his government. They’ve worked hard to fix the trade issues that had piled up over the years.
He pointed out that around $20 billion in trade barriers have been lifted, which is fantastic news for Australian exporters. It’s all about building a better relationship with China.
Back in October, Albanese and China’s Premier Li Qiang agreed to get the trade back on track by the end of 2024. It’s nice to see things moving in the right direction.
Just recently, the last trade barriers on two Australian abattoirs were lifted, paving the way for this lobster deal. It’s been a long road since 2020 when tensions rose over the COVID-19 inquiry.
Foreign Affairs Minister Penny Wong said their approach has really paid off. They promised to stabilize relations without giving up what matters to Australians, and they’ve done just that.
Trade Minister Don Farrell is thrilled about this news. He believes it’s a win for the lobster industry and for Chinese consumers who can now enjoy top-notch seafood just in time for the Lunar New Year.
Fisheries Minister Julie Collins added that this stabilization will benefit fishers and other primary producers in Australia. It’s a win-win situation!
