Lincolnshire: So, it turns out Lincolnshire Police has shelled out almost £600,000 in claims over the past few years. The main culprits? Road traffic accidents, lost property, and some serious stuff like unlawful arrests and false imprisonment.
According to some figures from Public Interest Lawyers, there have been 440 claims against the police since 2019. That’s a lot, but it’s nothing compared to Nottinghamshire Police, which has faced over 1,200 claims and paid out more than £1.8 million!
People usually file these claims when they feel the police have messed up. Interestingly, over £300,000 has been paid out in the last three years for police raiding the wrong homes. Can you imagine that? At least 255 cases of police barging into the wrong places!
In 2019/2020, Lincolnshire Police had 58 claims, with 28 settled. The next year saw 44 claims, and 19 were settled. But this year, things have ramped up, with 104 claims so far and 27 settled.
In total, Lincolnshire Police has paid out £594,547.80 over five years, with a whopping £219,948.08 in just one year! Most claims are about car crashes and property damage, with 135 claims related to road traffic collisions since 2019.
But here’s the kicker: they couldn’t even provide data for road traffic collisions for this year! Other common claims include 83 for lost property, 45 for forced entry, and 43 for unlawful arrests. There are even nine claims for false imprisonment.
Lucy Parker, a solicitor, pointed out that these claims highlight the need for accountability in police work. She mentioned that reasons for claims can range from wrongful arrests to property damage, and each case is unique.
If you think the police have wronged you, she advises getting legal advice quickly to know your options. Lincolnshire Live reached out to the police for comments, but they decided to stay quiet on the matter.
