Everton: Aubrey Street used to be a lively place filled with families. It’s hard to believe that it’s now just a memory. Back in the day, it was home to many, but it was demolished in the late 1960s.

Walking through your childhood neighborhood can be a mix of joy and sadness. For many in Liverpool, that stroll is now just a dream. Aubrey Street, once bustling with life, is now a part of history.

Old photos show how beautiful the buildings were. They had character, with three stories and big bay windows. There was even a dance hall and a boxing club where famous boxer Nel Tarleton trained.

Phillip Aspinall, who grew up there, shared his memories. He lived in a bedsit with his family and recalls the quiet mornings looking at the water tower. He remembers the tight-knit community, where families lived close together and visited often.

But in the late 1960s, everything changed. The government decided to demolish many homes, including Aubrey Street. Some houses were deemed unfit, while others were taken down for better planning.

Phillip felt the impact of the demolition. Families were uprooted, and many struggled with the change. While some were happy to move to nicer homes, others missed their old neighborhoods and the sense of community.

During that time, the local paper even started a feature to help those who had to move. It was a tough period for many, and the memories of Aubrey Street linger on in the hearts of those who once called it home.
