Letter: Lack of Public Loos Is No Laughing Matter

The closure of public toilets in Salisbury raises serious concerns for residents and visitors alike

Salisbury: It’s a real head-scratcher, isn’t it? Public toilets are super important for everyone, especially for older folks, families, and tourists. They really need to rethink closing these loos in the city center.

Honestly, it feels like a crazy idea. I mean, who thought that was a good plan?

Sure, the council has to save money, but cutting off access to toilets is just going to create more problems. Tourists and visitors help our local economy, and without decent facilities, they might think twice about coming here.

And let’s be real, if there aren’t enough toilets, people might just end up… well, you know, making a mess on the streets. Not cool!

The council seems to think shops and cafes can just step in and help out with toilet access. But wouldn’t it be better to actually talk to them first and work together?

One big worry is what happens after 11 PM. When people leave bars and clubs, they often need a loo, and street pastors like me are always pointing them to public toilets. For years, Salisbury was recognized for being a safe night out, but assessors kept saying we need more toilets.

Our nightlife has taken a hit lately, from the Novichok incident to COVID and now the cost of living crisis. And now, no toilets? That’s just asking for trouble, leading to people relieving themselves in public, which is bad for both our nightlife and daytime visitors.

Not exactly a laughing matter, right?
