Letter: Banning First-Cousin Marriages Is Not the Solution We Need
A letter argues against banning first-cousin marriages, suggesting education is a better approach to health concerns

Aldershot: So, there’s been some chatter about banning first-cousin marriages. But honestly, is that really the answer? Sure, there are some risks, but they’re not as high as you might think.
Instead of jumping to a ban, maybe we should focus on education. You know, things like smoking and drinking can also affect newborn health, but we don’t ban those. It’s all about making informed choices.
Plus, consanguineous marriages are part of many cultures. They help keep families close and build strong communities. Just look at European royals; they’ve been doing it for ages!
It’s important to separate cousin marriages from forced marriages. The latter is a whole different issue and shouldn’t be mixed in. We need to respect cultural practices without stigmatizing them.
Let’s hope the government takes a step back and looks at this with a level head. We value our freedoms and the right to make our own choices, after all.
