Leeds: Starting Monday, Leeds City Council will introduce parking charges at five parks. This decision comes after some opposition, but the council believes it’s necessary for maintenance and better facilities.

The parks affected are Otley Chevin, Golden Acre Park, Roundhay Park, Temple Newsam, and Middleton Park. Charges will apply only at the Urban Bike Park in Middleton.

The council faces budget challenges and needs to save over £100 million this year. They say significant investment is needed to keep the parks safe and welcoming.

From February 10, parking will cost £4 for a full day. A season ticket is available for £80, which is about £1.50 a week. Blue badge holders can park for free.

The council plans to use the income from parking charges to fund improvements like better surfaces, signage, and safe pedestrian access. They expect to recover costs within six months.

They aim to make the parks more accessible and easier to navigate. Cycle parking and electric vehicle charging stations will also be considered.

Councillor Mohammed Rafique emphasized the importance of sustainable funding for the parks. He noted that without it, these beloved spaces could deteriorate, posing health and safety risks.

Parking payments can be made using contactless cards or the PayByPhone app. Season tickets can be purchased online or at community hubs and libraries.

The parking charges are: £1 for up to 2 hours, £2.50 for half a day, and £4 for a full day. Season tickets are £10 per month or £80 per year. Charges apply seven days a week from 8 am to 8 pm.
