Lancashire: The Lancashire Constabulary has shelled out a whopping £768,345.37 in compensation claims over the last five years. That’s a lot of money, right?
According to some figures from Public Interest Lawyers, there have been 771 claims against the police since 2019. The biggest payout happened in 2020/21, hitting nearly £295,000.
These claims can be from the public or even from police staff themselves. It’s not just about the public; officers can claim too.
The most common issue? Unlawful arrests and false imprisonment, with 241 claims. There were also over 100 claims related to damage and personal injury.
In 2019/2020, the number of claims was pretty low at 98, but it dropped even more to 76 the following year. However, things took a turn recently, with claims skyrocketing to 314.
Lucy Parker, a solicitor with Public Interest Lawyers, mentioned that these claims highlight the need for accountability in police forces. She pointed out that reasons for claims can range from wrongful arrests to property damage.
She stressed that if someone feels wronged by the police, it’s super important to get legal advice quickly to know what options are available.
