Liverpool: A Labour MP is stepping up and calling for a national inquiry into grooming gangs. Dan Carden, who represents Liverpool Walton, is the first from his party to do so. He’s urging Sir Keir Starmer to take action and deliver justice.
Carden spoke to The Liverpool Echo, highlighting the real compassion people have for the victims, many of whom are young working-class girls. He believes the public’s demand for justice should not be ignored.
He expressed shock that those in power might have covered up these issues, possibly to avoid confronting tough racial or cultural topics. Carden insists it’s time to challenge the status quo that has led to these failures.
He’s not alone in his concerns. Pressure has been mounting on the Prime Minister to launch an inquiry, especially after Elon Musk criticized him on social media earlier this year.
Recently, the Conservatives tried to block a bill related to children’s wellbeing to push for a new inquiry, but Carden didn’t vote on that. He believes both Starmer and safeguarding minister Jess Phillips have strong records in this area, yet the government hasn’t taken a firm stand.
Carden insists the Prime Minister must use all available resources to ensure justice is served. He wants a clear message about the government’s stance and accountability for those who turned a blind eye.
So far, Starmer has resisted calls for a new inquiry, focusing instead on implementing recommendations from a previous inquiry into child sexual abuse. This inquiry had a detailed report on organized abuse networks published in early 2022.
Some, like Reform UK leader Nigel Farage, are ready to take matters into their own hands if the government doesn’t act soon. He’s promised to launch an inquiry if nothing changes by the end of January.
Farage criticized the previous inquiry as too broad and called for a more focused approach to address the specific issues surrounding grooming gangs, particularly those of Pakistani origin targeting young white girls.
Interestingly, recent police data shows that a significant majority of child abusers were white, contradicting some narratives around ethnicity and grooming gangs.
Home Secretary Yvette Cooper has announced plans to implement mandatory reporting of child sexual abuse, with more details expected soon. However, many people feel the government hasn’t done enough to tackle these issues, with recent polls showing a lack of confidence in the justice system.
