Liverpool: So, there’s been some buzz lately about grooming gangs and a national inquiry. Dan Carden, a Labour MP, is backing Andy Burnham’s call for this inquiry. It’s a big deal, especially since it touches on historical child sexual abuse.
Burnham, the mayor of Greater Manchester, mentioned he’s open to a limited national review. He’s been pushing for this since he started local reviews back in 2017. But not everyone is on board. A government minister quickly brushed off Burnham’s suggestion.
During a chat on BBC Radio Manchester, Burnham pointed out that there’s a real need for a national inquiry. He believes it could help uncover issues that local inquiries missed. It’s pretty wild that some Greater Manchester Police officers didn’t even participate in the local inquiry.
Another Labour figure, Ms. Nandy, acknowledged Burnham’s points but disagreed with him. She reminded everyone that the national inquiry set up by Theresa May was crucial because it gathered evidence from thousands of victims over seven years.
Now, Carden is stepping up, saying a national inquiry is necessary. He feels the public is really behind the victims, especially young working-class girls. He’s calling for justice and believes it’s shocking that those in power might have covered things up.
Carden insists that this isn’t just a far-right issue. He’s frustrated that more Labour voices haven’t spoken out against these crimes and the lack of action over the years. He’s pushing for a new approach to tackle these serious issues in our multi-ethnic society.
