Bispham: It’s a heartbreaking story about Kiena Dawes, a young mom who faced unimaginable pain. She wrote a letter revealing the abuse she suffered from her fiancé, Ryan Wellings, before taking her own life.
Kiena was just 23 and had a nine-month-old daughter. On July 22, 2022, she left her baby with a friend and tragically ended her life. In her note, she claimed, “I was murdered,” pointing fingers at Wellings for the torment she endured.
In court, Wellings was found not guilty of murder but was convicted of assault and controlling behavior. Kiena’s letter, discovered on her phone, showed how their relationship started off well but quickly turned toxic. He became controlling, accusing her of cheating and resorting to violence.
She described the first time he hit her, saying it was over a false accusation. The violence escalated, and even during her pregnancy, he was emotionally abusive. Kiena struggled with her mental health, and Wellings used that against her, making her feel isolated and trapped.
Despite a brief period of improvement after their baby was born, the abuse returned. Kiena felt like she was losing herself and believed she deserved the treatment she received. On the day she died, she left a note that read, “I fought hard, I fought long,” expressing the pain she endured.
Her story is a tragic reminder of the impact of domestic abuse. Wellings will face sentencing later, but Kiena’s heartbreaking letter sheds light on the struggles many face in silence.
