Fleetwood: A young mother, Kiena Dawes, faced unimaginable abuse from her boyfriend, Ryan Wellings. One horrifying moment saw him push her head underwater while threatening her in front of their baby.
Just 11 days after this final attack, Kiena took her own life. She had finally decided to report Wellings to the police for the years of torment she endured. Sadly, she left behind a nine-month-old daughter.
In a heartbreaking incident from March 2022, Wellings held her head under bathwater, telling her to “say goodbye to your baby.” This was just one of many violent episodes that left Kiena feeling hopeless.
During another attack, he threw her into a radiator so hard that it broke away from the wall. He even knocked her unconscious by slamming a door in her face, all while their child was nearby.
Kiena described her relationship as a “fairytale turned into a nightmare.” In April 2021, while seven months pregnant, she was filmed crying and terrified that Wellings would take her baby away from her.
She told the police that he threatened to inform social services about her mental health, which added to her distress. Kiena felt utterly alone, saying, “I’ve got no-one who can help me.”
After Kiena’s tragic death, Wellings faced trial for manslaughter but was found not guilty. However, he was convicted of assault and controlling behavior towards her.
The jury heard about a suicide note Kiena left, where she expressed her pain and named Wellings as her killer. She hoped her story would prompt faster action from the police to protect others.
Her heartbreaking situation highlights the urgent need for support and intervention in cases of domestic abuse. If you or someone you know is struggling, there are resources available to help.
