Woking’s Victoria Way is back open after a month-long closure due to storm damage

Woking: A major road in Woking town centre has finally reopened. It was closed for a whole month, right through the busy Christmas and New Year period. Now, both cars and pedestrians can use Victoria Way again.
Woking Borough Council announced the good news on Wednesday morning. They said, “Victoria Way has reopened to traffic and pedestrians this morning, marking the end of the temporary closure.” It’s a relief for everyone who uses this key route.
The road was shut down on December 7 after Storm Darragh caused some serious damage. Panels from the Hilton Hotel were dislodged and posed a risk to people below. So, Surrey Police made the call to close it for safety.
After about five weeks, the road is now safe for public use. Cllr Ann-Marie Barker, the leader of the council, expressed her relief, saying, “The safety of the public has always been our priority.”
This closure really disrupted traffic and foot traffic since it’s one of Woking’s main routes. And with it being the festive season, the timing couldn’t have been worse.
On January 7, a spokesperson for the construction company working on the nearby Victoria Square development said repairs were on track and should be done by mid-January.
Cllr Barker acknowledged the challenges the closure created for everyone and thanked the community for their patience. However, she also mentioned that they’re keeping an eye on the situation, as more work might be needed in the future.
