Key Israel Question Looms Over Labor Amid Tensions and Arrest Warrants
Australia’s Attorney-General remains tight-lipped on ICC warrants for Israeli leaders amid diplomatic tensions over Gaza

Canberra: So, there’s a bit of a stir going on with Australia’s Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus. He’s in Israel right now, trying to smooth things over between Australia and its Middle Eastern ally. But he’s not saying much about those ICC arrest warrants for Netanyahu and his former defense minister, Gallant.
The ICC has issued these warrants for alleged war crimes, which is a pretty big deal. But here’s the kicker: Israel doesn’t recognize the ICC, while Australia does. So, it’s a bit of a legal pickle. Dreyfus is playing it safe, saying he won’t speculate on whether Australia would actually arrest them.
He mentioned that Australia respects the ICC’s role but is not directly involved in this situation. It’s a tricky balance, especially with the ongoing conflict in Gaza and the rising tensions back home in Australia.
Other ministers have been cautious too. Foreign Minister Penny Wong hinted that arrests could happen but didn’t confirm anything outright. It’s clear the Albanese government is under pressure, especially with the high civilian casualties in Gaza drawing criticism.
Interestingly, Dreyfus noted that there’s a lot of support among Israeli officials for a ceasefire, which is a positive sign. He’s been meeting with various ministers and agency heads, and it seems like everyone’s on the same page about wanting a break in the fighting.
Netanyahu even mentioned that his government would back a ceasefire deal after some initial concerns were sorted out. So, while things are tense, there’s a glimmer of hope for some resolution.
