Sacramento: The NBA world was taken aback when the Kings fired coach Mike Brown. Warriors coach Steve Kerr was among those surprised.
Kerr shared his feelings with reporters in Inglewood before a game against the Clippers. He said, “I’m very disappointed to hear the news.” He emphasized that Brown is not just a great coach but also a good friend.
Brown, who is 54, was part of Kerr’s coaching staff for six seasons. During that time, the Warriors won three championships. After the Warriors’ 2022 title, Brown took the head coach position with the Kings.
Under Brown, the Kings had a strong season, winning 48 games last year, their best since 2004-05. They even pushed the Warriors to seven games in the playoffs, and Brown was named NBA Coach of the Year.
He ended a 16-season playoff drought for the Kings, which was the longest in NBA history. Kerr noted how impressive Brown’s work was, especially considering the franchise’s struggles before he arrived.
However, the Kings have hit a rough patch lately, losing five straight games, including a tough one against the Pistons. This has dropped them to the No. 12 seed in the West.
Kerr reflected on the importance of stability in coaching. He feels lucky to work in an organization that values continuity, which helps teams through tough times.
He expressed sympathy for Brown, saying, “I feel terribly for Mike today.” Kerr has been coaching the Warriors for over a decade, and he knows how challenging this business can be.
In the end, Kerr reminded everyone that coaching jobs are often short-lived, and while some coaches get lucky, many face tough situations.
