OTTAWA: So, Trudeau’s making some big moves today. He’s shuffling his cabinet at Rideau Hall, trying to get his government back on track.
Things have been a bit rocky since Chrystia Freeland stepped down as finance minister. That really shook things up and got people talking about whether Trudeau should step aside.
He’s looking to replace some ministers who aren’t running again and sort out the roles since a few folks have left. This could be his last big cabinet change before the next election, which is expected by fall 2025.
But here’s the catch: bringing in new faces might not go over well with some MPs who are hoping for promotions. With an election coming up next year, everyone’s got to decide if they’re in or out.
Word is, Trudeau will name a few new ministers today, including some MPs from Montreal, Winnipeg, Toronto, Ottawa, and Nova Scotia. He’s got to think about regional balance and gender representation while making these choices.
This shuffle is happening just before Trump takes office, so the new ministers will have to hit the ground running. Trudeau has been trying to bring in Mark Carney, a former central banker, for a key role, but the new finance minister, Dominic LeBlanc, says Carney won’t be taking that spot.
LeBlanc is also juggling a lot right now, including public safety, which is a hot topic with Trump’s threats about tariffs on Canadian goods. A few other ministers are also handling multiple departments after some left due to various reasons.
It’s been expected for a while that Trudeau would shake things up, especially since several ministers have announced they won’t run again. It’s a busy time in Canadian politics!
