Westminster: Two eco-activists have been charged with criminal damage after they sprayed chalk paint on Charles Darwin’s grave at Westminster Abbey.

They used bright orange paint to write “1.5 is dead” on the grave, which is a nod to the urgent climate crisis.

One of the women, Di Bligh, is 77 and used to be the chief executive of Reading Council. The other, Alyson Lee, is 66 and worked as a teaching assistant. They’re set to appear in court soon.

This incident happened on January 13, and photos of the vandalized grave quickly circulated online.

The phrase “1.5 is dead” refers to the goal of keeping global warming below 1.5 degrees Celsius, a target agreed upon by world leaders back in 2015.

Just recently, scientists announced that 2024 is the first year to hit an average temperature 1.5 degrees above pre-industrial levels, which is pretty alarming.

The Metropolitan Police confirmed that the two women were arrested after the incident and will face charges in court. It’s a serious matter, and they’re out on bail for now.
