Worcester’s Homicide Spike Doesn’t Reflect Overall Violent Crime Trends
Worcester’s homicide rate has surged, but overall shootings are down, indicating a complex picture of violence in the city this year

In 2023, there were six homicides, while this year’s numbers are concerning. However, nonfatal shootings have dropped significantly, from 32 last year to just 16 this year. This means that when you look at the overall picture, the combined total of shootings is down.
Interestingly, the last time nonfatal shootings were this low was back in 2019. That year had 13 homicides, showing that while the current homicide count is alarming, the overall trend in shootings is more positive.
Saucier emphasized that the goal is to reduce all types of shootings. He acknowledged that some nonfatal incidents could have easily turned deadly, but thankfully they didn’t. City Manager Eric D. Batista also expressed concern over the violence, stating that it doesn’t reflect the safe environment Worcester strives to maintain.
Batista mentioned that despite the uptick in homicides, the city remains one of the safest in the country. He highlighted the importance of community partnerships and proactive measures to prevent violence before it happens.
One of the most shocking incidents this year was the double homicide of Chasity Nuñez and her young daughter, which Saucier described as one of the worst he’s seen in his career. However, he noted that most of the homicides this year are considered solved.
There are still a couple of unsolved cases, including a man found shot in a truck and another incident involving two victims in an apartment. Authorities are actively seeking information on these cases.
Saucier also pointed out that many homicide victims knew their attackers, often having personal connections. This highlights the nature of these violent incidents, which are often not random acts of violence.
He stressed that most gun violence in Worcester is committed with illegal firearms, not by licensed gun owners. The police are working hard to address this issue, and they’ve confiscated around 100 firearms this year alone.
To tackle domestic violence, the Worcester Police Department is utilizing federal funding to focus on high-risk offenders. They’re collaborating with local organizations to provide support for victims, ensuring they receive the help they need.
Overall, while the rise in homicides is concerning, the drop in nonfatal shootings offers a glimmer of hope. The city is committed to addressing these issues and keeping Worcester safe for everyone.
