Washington: So, Mélanie Joly is in D.C. right now, and she’s got some updates for us. She’s been chatting with U.S. politicians about those pesky tariffs that Trump is threatening to impose.
She met with a bunch of folks from both sides of the aisle, including some big names like Senate Majority Leader John Thune and Senator Lindsey Graham. They were all trying to figure out what’s going on with these tariffs.
It’s a bit of a mess, honestly. Trump’s planning to slap a 25% tariff on goods coming from Canada and Mexico, and that’s got everyone on edge. Joly’s trying to get a handle on the situation before it gets out of hand.
Even Jonathan Wilkinson, the Energy Minister, was in D.C. this week, and he said that even the Republicans are a bit confused about what Trump’s really planning. It’s like nobody knows what’s going on!
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Trudeau had a meeting with the premiers back home to talk about how Canada should respond to this tariff threat. It’s a big deal, and they need to be ready.
Joly also had a sit-down with outgoing Secretary of State Antony Blinken. They’ve worked together on some global issues, so it’s good to keep those lines of communication open.
All in all, it’s a busy time for Joly, and we’ll see what she has to say about all these meetings and the tariff situation soon.
