Greater Manchester: This week, the region has been hit hard by a cold snap, bringing icy temperatures and a good amount of snow.
The snow started causing chaos on Sunday, and it’s been a bit of a mess ever since. Transport has really taken a hit with all the winter weather.
Several roads, including the notorious A57 Snake Pass, have been closed due to the heavy snowfall. Plus, the A555 Manchester Relief Road is still shut from flooding earlier this year.
Rail and Metrolink services have been delayed, leaving commuters scrambling for alternative travel options. It’s been a real hassle for many.
Manchester Airport even had to shut its runways four times because of the snow, which messed up flight schedules and led to some cancellations.
Schools have also been closed, and in some areas, bin collections have been postponed because of the weather. It’s been a tough week for everyone in Manchester.
But you know, there’s something kind of special about the snow we get here. It’s a bit of a pain to clear, but it has its charm.
We often get ‘wet snow’ in the UK, which happens when temperatures hover around freezing. This type of snow is heavier and turns into slush and ice, making things slippery.
In colder places, the snow is drier and easier to clear. It’s great for skiing, but our wet snow has its perks too, as Kathryn Chalk from the Met Office points out.
She explains that the size of snowflakes depends on the temperature. In warmer conditions, snowflakes stick together, creating those big, heavy flakes that are perfect for making snowmen.
So while we might not be able to hit the slopes, we can definitely have some fun making snowmen and throwing snowballs. Amid all the chaos, that’s a nice little silver lining!
