Inverness: Dell McClurg has just been honored with the British Empire Medal. This recognition comes from her tireless work in the community and for wildlife.

At 74, she’s still taking it all in. When she got the letter about the award, she felt it was important to accept it on behalf of her community and the volunteers who work hard there.

Dell lives in Merkinch, an area that sometimes gets a bad rap. She’s not shy about defending it, saying it’s a great place to live with a strong sense of community. “I wouldn’t go anywhere else,” she insists.

She’s been part of the Merkinch Community Council for about 45 years, including 13 years as chairperson. Dell has also been a big supporter of the Friends of Merkinch Local Nature Reserve and has worked with vulnerable kids in the area.

Her community work started when she was a young single mom, and she’s been a “do-er” ever since. She’s proud of her five kids, who are all doing well and have good jobs.

Dell feels frustrated when people think poorly of her neighborhood. Sure, there are some issues, but that’s true everywhere. She highlights the beauty of the area, with its nature reserve and wildlife.

She also praises fellow community leader Anne McCreadie, who received the BEM last year for her own contributions. Dell’s activism is all about making a difference, and she’s been doing it for over 40 years.

Last year, she was even nominated as a local hero by an MSP, which shows just how much her work is appreciated. It’s clear that Dell McClurg is a true champion for her community.
