Alice Springs: So, here’s the scoop. Over 30 police officers from South Australia are on their way to Alice Springs. They’re coming to help out the local police who’ve been stretched thin lately.
The first group is set to leave Adelaide on Monday. They’ll team up with local officers to patrol areas that need extra eyes, especially places where trouble tends to brew.
These officers have gone through cultural training, so they’ll be ready to engage with the community. They’ll be sworn in as NT Police for their eight-day stint, which is pretty cool.
NT Police Commissioner Michael Murphy mentioned that this support will help keep the positive momentum going in Alice Springs. It’s been a tough time, and he’s grateful for the quick response from South Australia.
In total, 40 officers will be rotating in and out, which should really help. Just a few months back, the town had to go into a three-day lockdown due to some serious violence, so this is a big deal.
In October, the government announced funding for community-led safety patrols, which is a step in the right direction. Minister Malarndirri McCarthy said these patrols are making a real difference.
Some officers will also be heading to Katherine for a different operation, focusing on high-risk offenders. It’s all part of a bigger plan to keep the community safe.
Grant Stevens, the South Australia Police Commissioner, noted that sending officers to help out in other areas isn’t unusual. They’ve done it before, like during the Christchurch earthquake.
NT Chief Minister Lia Finocchiaro is all for this move. She’s been vocal about making sure the Territory is safe and believes this support is crucial for local police.
She pointed out that for years, the previous government didn’t do enough, and now it’s time to step up and protect the community.
