An inquiry has concluded that no failings in care contributed to the deaths of two notorious paedophiles from Covid-19 in prison.

Dumfries: So, there was this inquiry about two infamous paedophiles who died from Covid-19 while in prison. Turns out, they found that nothing could have been done to save them.

Gordon Pinkerton, a former RAF guy, and Francis Moore, a priest, were both locked up at HMP Dumfries when they caught the virus during separate outbreaks.

Pinkerton, who was 75, passed away on April 22, 2020, and Moore, who was 85, died on February 27, 2021. The Covid Deaths Investigation Team looked into their cases, and a Fatal Accident Inquiry was held at Dumfries Sheriff Court.

Pinkerton had a pretty dark past, serving 15 years for abusing six young girls over many years. He even showed up at one victim’s home in his uniform to gain her trust before abusing her.

One of his victims said she felt so ashamed that she tried to take her own life. Pinkerton always denied what he did, though.

He was in a single cell and started feeling unwell on April 15, 2020. After a Covid test, he was isolated, but his health got worse, and he ended up in the hospital.

He initially refused treatment but sadly died a week later. Moore, on the other hand, was sentenced to eight years for abusing three kids, the youngest being just five.

He had heart issues before he died. A Covid outbreak hit HMP Dumfries on February 6, 2021, and while Moore tested negative at first, he later tested positive.

Even though he seemed fine, he was isolated. But then he started hallucinating and had to go to the hospital, where he eventually passed away.

The Sheriff, David Young, said both men got infected during a nationwide outbreak and died despite being treated promptly in the hospital.

He was satisfied that they received appropriate care throughout their time in prison and after. The Procurator Fiscal, Andy Shanks, confirmed that both men died from the virus while in custody.

So, that’s the scoop on this inquiry. It’s a tough situation, but it seems like everything that could be done was done.
