Cheddleton: An inquest has kicked off regarding the death of Elyse Foster, a vibrant 22-year-old. She passed away at Royal Stoke on October 17 last year.
Elyse was a care assistant who had been diagnosed with a rare cancer called thymoma earlier in 2024. Her mom, Kirstie, shared that Elyse was “fighting” and seemed to be “winning” her battle.
On October 7, after surgery, Elyse was in critical care when she stopped breathing and had a cardiac arrest. Although she pulled through, doctors later found she had a serious brain injury, leading to her life support being turned off ten days later.
The inquest was opened on Monday and will be rescheduled for a later date. It took place at Stoke Town Hall, led by coroner Emma Serrano.
Her celebration of life was held in a beautifully decorated marquee at Ashcombe Cricket Club in Cheddleton on November 29.
After Elyse’s passing, her mom Kirstie sought answers from Royal Stoke, expressing her heartbreak and concerns about the care Elyse received.
In response, Matthew Lewis, the medical director at University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust, extended condolences to Elyse’s family and mentioned they were in touch regarding the complaint.
During her funeral in November, over 100 friends and family gathered to honor Elyse, who was fondly remembered as the ‘Queen of Snapchat’ and a TikTok enthusiast.
Elyse had a love for travel, visiting places like Egypt, Zante, Paris, and the Canary Islands. She was also a talented singer and dancer, bringing joy to the residents at Treetops Court Care Home.
A GoFundMe set up by her close friend Caitlin Taaffe raised over £13,000 to help with funeral expenses.
