This whole mess started when Terry, 78, was attacked in one of his enclosures. It was a nasty scene, and he ended up losing a chunk of his leg. Thankfully, the police got there in time to save him without harming the cat.
Just a few months before this incident, Terry was hit with a hefty fine and banned from keeping big cats. But the ban was put on hold because no one could find a new home for the cats. Now, the Hertfordshire Zoo and The Big Cat Sanctuary are stepping in to help.
They’re trying to find forever homes for 14 of Terry’s cats that they couldn’t take in. They’re racing against the clock to rescue these animals from what they call long-standing neglect. The authorities got involved after discovering serious welfare issues at Terry’s place.
The cats in need of homes include some rare species like the Amur leopard and the UK’s only Asian Golden Cat. Cam Whitnall from The Big Cat Sanctuary is leading the charge to find them good homes. He’s hopeful but knows they’re on a tight timeline.
While some cats might not be rehomed due to health issues, the teams are committed to giving them the best care possible. So far, 14 cats have found new homes, including Frank, the Asian Golden Cat, who’s now at The Big Cat Sanctuary.
Frank is a big deal since he’s one of only seven in European zoos. He’s not just a pretty face; he’s helping raise awareness about his endangered species. The sanctuary is also doing research to learn more about these amazing animals.
It’s a tough situation, but there’s hope for these big cats. Let’s keep our fingers crossed that they find the loving homes they deserve.
