Bali Nine, Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto, Australia, Drug Smuggling

Jakarta: So, Indonesia’s President Prabowo Subianto just made a pretty big move by releasing the last of the Bali Nine. These guys were serving life sentences for trying to smuggle a bunch of heroin into Australia. And guess what? The Australian government is actually thanking him for it!

It’s wild because Indonesia has some of the strictest drug laws out there. The previous president, Joko Widodo, was super tough on drugs, so getting any kind of leniency was a tough sell. But Prabowo seems to be playing a different game.

He’s got a military background and some serious human rights issues in his past, but that doesn’t seem to be holding him back. Experts say he’s using this release to show the West that he’s someone they can work with, despite his history.

Plus, this move helps with Indonesia’s overcrowded prisons. They’re planning to pardon a ton of inmates soon, so this fits right in. Prabowo is also looking to boost Indonesia’s role on the global stage, which is pretty ambitious.

He’s even thinking about releasing a French prisoner and a Filipino on death row for drug smuggling. It’s like he’s sending a message that he’s open for business with countries that have abolished the death penalty, like Australia and the EU.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said this wasn’t a prisoner swap but an act of compassion. He believes it was time for these men to come home. But it won’t be easy for them. They’ll have to deal with a lot of challenges, like reconnecting with family and finding jobs after all this time.

And even though they’re back in Australia, they can’t go back to Indonesia. They’re banned from re-entering. It’s a complicated situation, but it looks like Prabowo is trying to make some waves internationally.
