Mumbai: The screening for Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) at Indian airports hasn’t kicked off yet. Authorities are still waiting for the Union government to give the green light. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is also on standby for directives from the central government. Public health experts are urging that screening should start soon, especially since the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has confirmed two cases of HMPV in the country.

Sources from the Airports Authority of India mentioned that no screenings are happening right now. They said the process will begin once the ministry or local administration issues guidelines. Dr. Daksha Shah from the BMC confirmed they’re waiting for the Union government to provide instructions before they can act.

The Ministry of Civil Aviation is also in a holding pattern, waiting for the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare to issue guidelines. A source from the Ministry of Civil Aviation said they’re ready to implement the screening as soon as they receive the necessary directives. However, setting up screening stations at airports will take some time due to various security protocols that need to be followed.

With the Chinese New Year holidays approaching on January 15, many Indians living in China are expected to return home. Health experts are concerned and believe that screening should have already started. Dr. Subhash Salunkhe, a former health services director, emphasized the need for immediate action, suggesting that passengers from high-risk countries should be screened accordingly.

As of now, the BMC has reported no cases of HMPV in Mumbai. They noted that HMPV can cause respiratory infections similar to the common cold and is typically more prevalent during winter and early summer. The BMC reassured the public that there’s no need to panic, as they are taking necessary precautions.

To stay safe, health authorities recommend covering your mouth when coughing, washing hands frequently, and avoiding public places if you feel unwell. They also advise drinking plenty of water and ensuring good ventilation in indoor spaces. On the flip side, it’s best to avoid close contact with sick individuals and refrain from touching your face.
