Ottawa: So, it looks like Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is taking a moment to think things over after Chrystia Freeland stepped down as finance minister. Energy Minister Jonathan Wilkinson mentioned this on Tuesday.
It seems like more and more Liberals are starting to question Trudeau’s leadership. With the House of Commons on break, he has a few weeks to figure out his next steps before MPs return on January 27.
Freeland’s resignation came just three days after Trudeau told her she would be moved out of the finance role. This all happened right before she was supposed to present the government’s fall economic statement, which added to the chaos.
That day was pretty wild on Parliament Hill. There was an unexpected cabinet meeting, and everyone was confused about who would present the financial update, or if it would even happen.
Some Liberal MPs were so concerned that they called for an emergency caucus meeting. During that meeting, a few members even suggested that Trudeau should step down as party leader.
In other news, a big foreign bank, Banco Santander from Spain, is looking to enter Canada’s retail banking market. They’ve got a ton of customers worldwide, and it could shake things up a bit here.
Also, voters in Alberta are heading to the polls today for a byelection in Lethbridge-West. The seat became vacant after NDP MLA Shannon Phillips resigned back in July.
And Metro is making big moves with its supply chain, investing nearly a billion dollars to modernize its operations in Quebec and Ontario. This should help them keep up with the competition.
