Demolition Begins on Popular Belfast Bar for New Student Housing

Demolition has started on a beloved Belfast bar to make room for new student apartments, following its closure on New Year’s Eve.

Belfast: Demolition is in full swing at one of the city’s favorite nightlife spots. Filthy McNasty’s is being torn down to make way for a new student apartment block. It’s a big change, especially since the bar just closed its doors for the last time on New Year’s Eve.

Workmen showed up early Thursday to start taking down Filthy McNasty’s and its cocktail lounge, Liquor XXX. This spot has been a go-to for many, so it’s a bit sad to see it go.

The plans for this new development include over 200 student apartments. The Belfast City Council gave the green light for this project last August. They’re also looking to build a new pub on Ventry Street, which is part of the same plan.

Filthy McNasty’s has been around since 2009, but before that, it was known as Dempseys. That place had its own ups and downs, closing for a while after a fire back in 2007.

There’s more student housing on the way in the Dublin Road area too. Queen’s University is working on a new accommodation building at the old Movie House cinema site, and there’s already some student housing at Bradbury Place.
