Rawalpindi: So, a Pakistani court just hit former Prime Minister Imran Khan with a 14-year prison sentence over a land corruption case. This news came from local media, and it’s quite a big deal.
The court’s decision was made in a prison, where Khan has been since August 2023. This case is one of the biggest financial scandals he’s faced. It all revolves around claims that he and his wife received land as a gift from a real estate developer while he was in office from 2018 to 2022.
Both Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, said they didn’t do anything wrong. The verdict was delayed a few times, which added to the drama, especially with ongoing talks between the government and Khan’s party.
Interestingly, Bushra Bibi, who was out on bail, was also taken into custody after being convicted. Khan’s party is insisting that the case against them is weak and will eventually fall apart.
This ruling is a major blow for Khan and his party, especially after they performed surprisingly well in the recent elections, even though they had to run as independents. They won a lot of seats but didn’t get enough to form a government.
Khan has been in jail since August and is dealing with a bunch of other cases too, ranging from corruption to inciting violence. Most of the time, he’s either been cleared or had his sentences suspended, except for one case where he was accused of encouraging his supporters to riot after his arrest in May 2023.
His supporters have been pretty vocal, leading protests since then. It’s been a wild ride for Khan, and this latest sentence just adds to the chaos.
