Garstang: A man on trial for his partner’s suicide insists he’s not a monster. Ryan Wellings, 30, is facing manslaughter charges after Kiena Dawes, 23, tragically took her own life in July 2022.

Kiena was found near a railway line, leaving a heartbreaking note claiming she had been “murdered, slowly” by Wellings. The case has drawn significant attention, especially after a video surfaced of Wellings singing about the charges shortly after his arrest.

In the video, he seemed to blame Kiena’s family for her death, which raised eyebrows in court. He explained that he was in a lot of pain when he recorded it and only meant to keep it private.

Wearing sunglasses and a casual outfit, Wellings appeared relaxed while drinking Prosecco in the video, which prosecutors used to paint a picture of his character. They argued it showed a side of him that was arrogant and dismissive.

Wellings defended himself, saying he was overwhelmed and hurting after losing Kiena. He acknowledged that he had made mistakes but insisted he never meant to harm her.

On the day Kiena died, she had been looking at his social media posts and left a note expressing her fears about their daughter being raised by him. Wellings claimed Kiena had a complicated view of him, sometimes calling him a great dad.

He admitted that their relationship had its ups and downs, including physical arguments. He described a specific incident where a fight escalated, leading to a police panic alarm being activated.

Wellings also mentioned an incident where he kicked a door in frustration, not realizing Kiena was behind it. He denies any responsibility for her injuries, maintaining that he never intended to hurt her.

As the trial continues, the jury will have to weigh the evidence and testimonies to determine the truth behind this tragic case.
