Ilkley: The new fountain at the top of Brook Street is finally here. Last week, the hoardings came down, revealing its modern design to everyone.
Organizers have added steel nameplates to honor those who helped with the project. They also planted bulbs to add some color before the big day.
Alan Titchmarsh will cut the ribbon on Wednesday, April 30, at 11 am. The group Improving Ilkley is working to optimize the water flow, so it might be turned off at times.
Matthew Ward, a trustee of Improving Ilkley, expressed excitement about the fountain. He thanked everyone who stopped by to chat while they planted bulbs and installed nameplates.
The new fountain replaces an old one from 1865. It was chosen through a public competition and funded by donations. Local artists Juliet and Jamie Gutch designed it to reflect the sphagnum moss found on Ilkley Moor.
This fountain filters and purifies water while also storing carbon. It will even light up at night, adding beauty to the area.
Improving Ilkley plans to add seating around the fountain for people to gather. They also want to remove the uneven wall and restore the original fountain bowl.
On February 12 at 6 pm, members of Improving Ilkley will be at the fountain to answer questions from locals. They will also install a plaque explaining the fountain’s design inspiration.
They thanked everyone who supported the project, saying, “The Ilkley Fountain is our gift to the town.”
