Idiot Behaviour on Popular Beach Highlights Worrying Trend Among Aussies
Recent incidents of reckless e-bike riding on Australian beaches raise concerns about environmental impact and wildlife safety

Peregian Beach: Over the weekend, some beachgoers decided to take their e-bikes for a spin on the sand dunes. At first glance, it might seem like harmless fun, but it’s actually causing some serious issues for the environment.
A local resident was not happy about it, saying, “More idiot behaviour by kids on e-bikes riding over the dunes. Never mind the turtle nests!” It turns out there aren’t any strict rules against riding e-bikes on the beach, but everyone is expected to stay off the dunes.
Ben Derrick, who manages Environmental Services in Noosa Shire, explained that these dunes are super important. They help protect the area from floods and wind erosion. He expressed disappointment that people are ignoring the rules and damaging the environment.
Those tire tracks can be a real danger for turtles, especially when they’re nesting. Just recently, a plover chick was found dead on Seacliff Beach, likely hit by someone riding an e-bike. It’s a sad reminder of how careless actions can have serious consequences.
As turtles use the dunes to lay their eggs, they’re at risk of getting hurt. Sadly, many turtles have died along the Cooloola Coast because of vehicles driving on the dunes. Derrick pointed out that vehicles can destroy fragile root systems, which can disturb shorebirds and threaten turtle nesting.
It’s a tough situation, and it’s clear that we need to be more mindful of our actions to protect our wildlife and natural spaces.
