Weston-super-Mare: Exciting changes are coming to the Tropicana building! The council has big plans to turn this iconic spot into a lively venue for events. They’re looking to replace the old 1980s structure with a brand-new one that can host around 1,000 people indoors.

But that’s not all! They aim to boost the total capacity to about 5,000, making it a fantastic place for larger gatherings. Plus, they’ll be sprucing up the main 1930s building, which is pretty cool.

As part of this project, they’re also focusing on sustainability. They plan to add heat pumps and solar panels to make the venue more energy-efficient. It’s great to see them tackling climate issues while creating a fun space!

This transformation is part of a larger vision for the town, thanks to a £20 million boost from the UK government. The council hopes this revamp will put the Tropicana on the map as a major entertainment hub.

The Tropicana has a rich history, having been a swimming pool since 1937 until it closed in 2000. Since then, it’s seen various attempts at development, including hosting Banksy’s Dismaland in 2015 and an outdoor ice rink last year.

Cllr Mike Solomon from the council shared that this planning application is a significant step forward. He’s excited about the new designs and believes they’ll help attract top-notch events and acts to Weston.

They’ve been listening to community feedback, too. After hosting drop-in events, they’ve adjusted their plans based on what locals want to see. It’s all about making this venue fit for the future!

Once approved, the new venue will be flexible enough to host various events year-round. They’re aiming for a mix of indoor and outdoor activities, including live music concerts.

Construction is set to wrap up by March 2026, and while the venue is partially closed now, the Bay Café and Makers Market will stay open for visitors. Exciting times ahead for Weston-super-Mare!
