Phelan, who’s 62, signed on as assistant head coach until December 8. He took over from Pete Shuttleworth, who left for personal reasons. But just 23 days later, he’s out.
Plymouth announced on New Year’s Eve that they and Rooney had decided to part ways. Rooney even gave a shout-out to Phelan in his farewell, praising his dedication and support.
Earlier, Rooney had expressed excitement about bringing Phelan on board, saying he knew him well from their time at Manchester United. But after Phelan joined, the team lost four out of five matches. Ouch!
Before Phelan arrived, Plymouth was already struggling, and now they’re sitting at the bottom of the league table, four points from safety. Not a great spot to be in.
Phelan returned to coaching at Plymouth after leaving Manchester United for the second time. He had a solid run with Sir Alex Ferguson, winning the Premier League three times before parting ways in 2013. It’s a tough break for him and the club.
