But running a coffee shop isn’t all sunshine and lattes. James points out a big challenge: people lingering for hours with just one cup of coffee. It’s a tricky balance to strike, especially since many folks have gotten used to working from coffee shops post-pandemic.
He understands why some shops put up signs asking customers to limit their time at tables. It’s a tough call, but he wants to keep the vibe friendly while also ensuring the business can survive. He’s seen other places charge for Wi-Fi, and while he hasn’t gone that route yet, he gets why they do it.
James has also faced rising costs. Coffee prices have shot up, and he’s had to adjust his menu prices to keep up. Despite this, he’s noticed that customers are understanding. They appreciate the quality and experience he offers, which keeps them coming back.
Interestingly, the coffee scene in the UK is still growing. Research shows that independent coffee shops are thriving, and people are visiting them more than ever. James is optimistic about the future, especially as he plans to expand his Coffi Lab brand.
Reflecting on his journey, James admits he sometimes wondered if leaving banking was a mistake. But now, he knows it was the best choice he could have made. He’s passionate about creating a space where people can connect, relax, and enjoy a great cup of coffee.
