Birmingham: Recently, I joined the police in Erdington, a neighborhood facing serious crime issues. The West Midlands Police reported that crime here cost taxpayers around £7 million last year. They’re tackling problems like open drug use and violence, and I got to see their efforts firsthand.

When chatting with locals, the most common request was simple: “We need more police out and about.” Many residents feel that having more officers on the streets would really help improve safety and confidence in the area.

The police have launched Operation Fearless, which is backed by a million pounds from crime proceeds. This initiative aims to address crime in Erdington before moving on to other troubled areas in Birmingham.

We kicked off our day at Erdington railway station, where officers set up a knife arch. It was pretty low-key, and passengers passed through without any issues. But then, a lorry hit a nearby bridge, causing a bit of chaos.

As we made our way to Erdington’s High Street, it was bustling with shoppers. However, many store owners, like Tam Langari from the Bag Shop, expressed concerns about shoplifting and crime. He mentioned that people are scared to shop there.

One local, Dennis Wheelan, shared his worries about safety. He said his daughter and grandkids avoid the area because they feel unsafe. But he also noted that seeing more police around is a positive sign.

On the day I was with the police, they made several arrests, including one man wanted for burglary and another for failing to appear in court. They also seized two vehicles and arrested six men for conspiracy related to counterfeit goods.

We wrapped up the day watching the police dog unit interact with the community. Det Insp Tom Lyons, who regularly patrols Erdington, mentioned that the public’s response has been great. They’re using stop-and-search tactics to combat drug use and shoplifting, and even had help from a bystander during a foot chase.

It’s still early to tell how effective Operation Fearless will be, but with dedicated funding and more officers on the streets, residents are feeling hopeful for a safer future.
