Chapel Hill: Bill Belichick kicked off his new role as North Carolina’s football coach with a press conference that had fans buzzing. He really connected with the crowd right from the start.
During the event, he shared some personal stories about his dad, Steve, who was an assistant coach at UNC. Belichick was just a little kid back then, but he recalled a funny family tale. He even held up an old sweatshirt from his dad, which got everyone smiling.
He joked, “Billy’s first words were ‘beat Duke,’” which definitely struck a chord with the fans. It’s pretty cool to see a guy with six Super Bowl rings stepping into college football. He’s only the second coach to make this jump after winning in the NFL, following in the footsteps of Bill Walsh.
After taking a year off from coaching, Belichick said he’s always had a dream of coaching in college. He added with a straight face, “Had some good years in the NFL, so that was OK.”
When asked if he might leave for the NFL again, he was firm. “I didn’t come here to leave,” he stated, making it clear he’s committed to the Tar Heels. He signed a five-year deal, so he’s in it for the long haul.
As he gears up for his 30th season as a head coach, Belichick reflected on why he loves coaching. He said it doesn’t feel like work to him. “Beats working,” he quipped. He’s all about the game, the players, and building a solid team.
