Greater Manchester: I’m always on the lookout for good deals when I shop for food. It’s become second nature, especially with the rising cost of living.
Having covered this topic for a while, I’ve learned to keep an eye on prices and find the best supermarkets for bargains. So, I was surprised to discover a surplus food shop I hadn’t heard of before.
The Company Shop is a well-known place in the UK for discounted surplus products. They have a network of surplus supermarkets that sell goods from over 800 brands at lower prices.
To shop there, you need to meet certain criteria, but it’s pretty inclusive. Employees from various sectors, like the NHS and emergency services, can join, and they can bring two guests along.
I decided to check it out one Monday morning, and wow, it was packed! The Middleton branch is the only one in Greater Manchester, with another nearby in St Helens.
Inside, it looks like a regular supermarket, with aisles of tins, packets, and fresh food. I was impressed by the variety, especially the fridge and freezer sections.
One of my favorite finds was a pack of Stella Artois for just £3.50. That’s a steal compared to the usual price at Tesco or Sainsbury’s!
Everything I bought was in date, which is a big plus. Some items were close to their expiration, but most had plenty of time left. I even snagged pots of Sainsbury’s houmous for just 10p!
The selection was way better than other surplus shops I’ve visited. I saw products from all the big names like M&S, Tesco, and Morrisons.
Some of the prices were jaw-dropping. M&S beans for 15p, Tesco pork pies for 50p, and Mr Kipling French Fancies for 95p? Yes, please!
I also got a massive gammon joint for half price. Originally nearly £19, I got it for just £9.48. That’s a great deal for a family meal!
There were plenty of sweet treats too, like ice cream and desserts. I found some great deals on cakes and biscuits, which made my day.
In total, I spent just over £50 and walked away with way more than I would have at a regular supermarket. It was totally worth the trip!
Plus, Company Shop gives back to the community by supporting initiatives that tackle food insecurity. It’s nice to know my shopping helps others.
If you’re in the area, Company Shop Middleton is open every day, and it’s worth checking out if you want to save some cash on groceries.
