Tenbury Wells: The Oldfields Cider Wassail took place on Saturday, January 18. It was held at a farm in Frith Common, near Tenbury Wells.

This event is a centuries-old British tradition. It honors the spirits of trees and aims for a good harvest.

More than 150 people joined in the fun, led by the Leominster Morris. They guided the crowd through the lively ceremony among ancient apple trees.

The celebration began with attendees gathering around 12 bonfires. These bonfires surrounded the orchard’s central tree, symbolizing the farm’s apple-growing heritage.

As the flames danced, the crowd participated in a noisy “Hullabaloo.” This raucous clamor was meant to scare away evil spirits and invite good fortune.

After the Wassail ceremony, the Leominster Morris performed a traditional ‘mummers play’ outside the Oldfields cider shop. Attendees also joined in some Morris dancing.

Preparations are already starting for next year’s festivities.
