London: The latest stats show that e-scooter accidents are causing quite a stir. In 2023, the Met Police reported 321 casualties from these collisions. That’s a lot of people getting hurt!
Last year, the total number of e-scooter-related injuries across Britain hit 1,387. While that’s a drop from 1,502 in 2022, it’s still a big jump from just 484 in 2020.
Most of the injured were e-scooter users, with 1,117 casualties, including 105 who were using rental scooters. It’s clear that as more people hop on these things, the risks are rising.
Rod Dennis from the RAC pointed out that while e-scooters can help with short trips, they also add to the chaos on the roads. He stressed the need for riders to be skilled and safe.
He also mentioned that stopping the illegal use of private e-scooters is crucial. Some of these scooters are modified to go way too fast, which is a recipe for disaster.
The police noted that 416 people were seriously injured, and sadly, six riders lost their lives in these accidents. It’s a tough reality that we need to face.
A government spokesperson reassured that safety is a priority in e-scooter trials. They’ve set standards for design and regulations to keep everyone safe.
Despite the regulations, private e-scooters are still illegal on public roads. The government is committed to supporting police enforcement to tackle this issue.
It’s a tricky situation, and as e-scooter use grows, we all need to be more aware of our surroundings. Let’s hope for safer roads ahead!
