Humshaugh: On January 23, folks in the area will get to vote on whether they want the Northumberland County Council and the Northumberland National Park Authority to use a new neighbourhood plan for future planning decisions.
This referendum wraps up a lot of discussions and consultations that the parish council has been having. It’s a big deal because if most people vote yes, the local authorities will use this plan to guide their planning applications.
The voting will be set up like a local election. Everyone eligible will get polling cards in the mail. Plus, there will be options for postal and proxy voting for those who need it.
On the day of the referendum, polling will be open from 7 am to 10 pm. Voters can check their polling card to find out where to go.
Now, there’s a new rule: you’ll need to show some form of photo ID when you vote in person. Colin Horncastle, a local councillor, mentioned that neighbourhood planning helps communities have a say in how their areas develop.
He really hopes everyone will take part in the referendum and make their voices heard. Accepted IDs include a driving licence, passport, or even a blue badge. Just remember, it has to be the original ID, not a copy.
If you want to know more about what IDs are accepted or how to get a free voter ID, check out the Electoral Commission’s website. You can also find the neighbourhood plan and other related documents on the county council’s neighbourhood planning site.
