North Wales: This morning, folks in North Wales were jolted awake by a huge thunderclap as Storm Herminia rolled in. The storm, with its Spanish name, hit last night, bringing heavy rain and strong winds.
The Met Office has put out weather warnings for wind and rain, warning of possible flooding and damage. Thunderstorms have also been reported, affecting Wales and parts of the South West of England.
They even asked on social media if anyone else was woken up by the thunder. One resident in Eryri shared how a loud bang startled him awake. He described it as a cinematic experience, starting with a low rumble before the big bang.
The Met Office explained that the noise comes from lightning strikes. When lightning hits, it heats the air to around 30,000 °C, causing a shockwave that we hear as thunder.
Even though the lightning has passed, North Wales is bracing for more wind and rain in the next 24 hours. The Met Office warns of frequent showers and the risk of local flooding.
They also mentioned it will be windy everywhere, especially along the coast, with severe gales expected. The temperature will be around 7 °C, with more rain likely this evening and overnight.
