Bridgwater: This morning, the M5 in the West Country is a mess. There’s a huge backup of 50 to 70 minutes due to a crash on the northbound side at Cribbs Causeway. The accident even led to a fire, but thankfully, firefighters got it under control pretty quickly.

National Highways is saying that traffic is crawling for miles between junctions 20 and 17. They expect things to get back to normal by around 9:45 AM.

According to traffic monitoring site Inrix, the northbound exit slip road is closed, and two lanes are blocked because of the vehicle fire at junction 17. The congestion stretches all the way back to junction 19, and travel times are around 70 minutes.

Police confirmed that the incident involved a collision, and while a small vehicle fire occurred, it was quickly extinguished. A few people were checked by the ambulance service, but it seems no one needed to go to the hospital.

This whole situation started around 6:20 AM. Earlier, there was another crash involving two lorries and a car on the southbound side at junction 18, but that’s been cleared up, and traffic there is moving smoothly now.
