Sydney: Flocks of locals are lining up at popular spots for the New Year’s Eve fireworks. Some areas are already filling up fast, and it’s still hours before the show.

More than a million people are expected to join the festivities. Thankfully, the event is on after the train workers’ union called off their planned strike. So, public transport will run smoothly for 48 hours.

People are already camping out at the best viewing locations. The designated spots will open between 8 am and 7 pm, and it’s first-come, first-served until they hit capacity.

Many of the prime spots don’t require tickets this year, so folks are encouraged to arrive early. Last year’s celebration was a hit, and this year promises to be even bigger.

With nine tonnes of fireworks and a laser show that the Lord Mayor is calling “more lasers than Star Wars,” it’s no wonder excitement is in the air.

Organizers are urging everyone to take public transport, with 3,600 extra trains and more buses and ferries available. They’re also advising people to plan ahead and leave their cars at home.

Major roads will start closing at 6 am on New Year’s Eve, including the Cahill Expressway and roads in The Rocks and CBD North. The Sydney Harbour Bridge will be shut from 11 pm until 1:30 am.

The official events kick off at 7:30 pm, with early fireworks at 9 pm, showcasing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists. Then, at 9:15 pm, the Sydney Harbour Lights will dazzle as boats create a visual spectacle.

The grand finale at midnight will feature fireworks launched from the Harbour Bridge, Opera House, and other iconic spots. It’s going to be a night to remember!

For those who can’t make it out, don’t worry! The whole display will be live-streamed online and broadcast on TV, so everyone can join in the fun.
